May 19, 2015, Arvada, CO ~ Last year saw the new READ (Literacy) Act Plans put in place at Hackberry Hill Elementary. Research indicates that if a child is not reading up to grade level by the end of third grade then their chances of reaching grade level proficiency are difficult the older the student gets.
Instructional Coach, Lindsay Petty, saw a literacy gap among some of the third graders and knew that literacy resources were needed for fourth grade students, as well as training for teachers that would be supporting these students. She knew that if Hackberry Hill was to truly support all of its students when funds were not currently available through District or state resources, she would have to get funding somewhere.
Petty applied for a Salazar Literacy Grant from Jeffco Schools Foundation for fourth grade Amplify materials (DIBLES Next and BURST assessment tools), teacher raining and Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) kits.
After this first year, the project was a huge success as Hackberry Hill students are reading at grade level and the materials will be used for incoming students who face similar challenges. Although no longer available, Salazar Literacy Grants had an enormous impact on the students of Jeffco Public Schools.
