May 18. 2015, Lakewood, CO ~ As Jeffco’s “home-grown superintendent,” Dr. Cindy Stevenson often remarked that whenever she went to the old Lakewood High School where she graduated from, “I always felt like I had gone home.”
And that seemed to be the feeling that many people shared at Jeffco School Foundation’s Love Our Schools luncheon fundraiser at the Arvada Center on May 5th. The warmth and camaraderie of old friends, former staff members, and community supporters made for an emotional celebration, as the Board of Directors of Jeffco Schools Foundation presented Stevenson with the 2015 Norma Anderson Lifetime Service Award.
South Lakewood Elementary School Choir started the ball rolling with a rousing rendition of “Hello Cindy”, sung to the tune of “Hello Dolly.” Sen. Norma Anderson said, “When you’re from Jefferson County, you’re proud of Jefferson County. Cindy was proud of our county and I think that helped in her leadership.” “Cindy’s heart and soul were about Jeffco Public Schools,” said retired Columbine Principal, Frank DeAngelis.
To kick off the newly created Excellence in Philanthropy Award, the choir sang their “ABCs” and introduced the first and most-deserving award recipient, the Salazar Family Foundation. To date, Salazar Family Foundation has provided over a million dollars in support, funding literacy intervention training for teacher across the district, as well as laptops software, books and learning materials, and many projects that worked to close achievement gaps throughout Jeffco Public Schools.
By underwriting the costs of major initiatives, the Salazar Family Foundation helped Jeffco Schools Foundation support projects such as Lights On After School programming, Colorado Reading Corps tutors, and the Jeffco Summer of Early Literacy (JSEL) Initiative. This year the JSEL program is expanding to serve 30 Jeffco schools and almost 2,000 student.
The Salazar Family Foundation allowed Jeffco Schools Foundation to focus programming on projects that addressed the academic challenges resulting from increases in student poverty and homelessness in Jefferson County.
