Students received a jump on learning at Lumberg Elementary in Edgewater thanks to the school’s Summer Jump Start program, which served both English and dual language students in first through sixth grade. The two and a half week educational opportunity was free to Lumberg students due in part to a grant from the Jeffco Schools Foundation Salazar Literacy Initiative.

Lumberg’s Summer Jump Start program fostered the growth and development of students’ literacy skills. Developmental reading was offered at all grade levels for students who were recommended by their teachers for extra help. The program followed the Balanced Literacy format and included the following components: guided reading, independent reading, shared reading, word study, read aloud, and writing.

Lumberg Elementary is able to provide all students with a personal iPad for school use. The Summer Jump Start program utilized literacy-based apps on the iPads geared toward each students’ individual needs and interests. Students also had access to the “Lexia Core 5” app which provided personalized learning “games” to develop skills in the six areas of reading instruction.

The Lumberg Elementary Summer Jump Start program provided students with safe, engaging and innovative learning activities, and the opportunity to build community within and beyond the school.

The Salazar Literacy Initiative, a program of Jeffco Schools Foundation, provides classroom grants for innovative reading and writing programs that seek to close literacy achievement gaps in Jeffco Public Schools. The Initiative has funded over $1 million in programming since 1999.
